What Metal Should I Choose For My Grillz? A Guide to Gold, Silver & More

How to Choose the Right Metal for You

Many people find it difficult to decide what metal is best to choose when ordering their grillz, so we've put together some information to help make that decision a little bit easier!

Read below for the various different types of metals that can be used along with the pros and cons for each of them.

925 Silver Grillz

925 Silver is an alloy made up of 92.5% pure silver and 7.5% other metals. It's the most cost effective option you can go for.

Pros

- A cost effective option if you are just starting your grillz collection

- Has a nice shine similar to white gold

Cons

- Silver grillz will tarnish quicker than other metals, just like any other silver jewellery tarnishes over time. We never recommend smoking, drinking acidic drinks or eating with your grillz. If you do this, your grillz will tarnish much faster. However, we do offer a polishing service to bring your grillz back to their original shine.

- Has more of a metallic taste

- More malleable than other metals. This means if you don't look after your grillz the shape may be effected and it's possible they won't fit correctly. We advise you to put your grillz back onto the mould to keep their shape

Dental Yellow/White Gold Grillz

Dental Gold is made up of various alloys to create the look of real yellow or white gold. It's often used in dentistry work due to how durable it is and how resistant it is to tarnish in the mouth.

Pros

- A cost effective option to real gold

- Very strong and durable

- Tarnish resistant. Although we always advise that you don't smoke with your grillz, we know some of you will. Dental gold will not be effected by the heat of smoking like silver and gold will. They may still tarnish over time, however this will be a lot slower compared to other metals. You can always book your grillz in to be polished back to their original shine

Cons

- Has a slightly duller appearance compared to real gold

- Dental gold can contain nickel plus a mixture of other alloys, if you are sensitive to certain metals, we recommend opting for real gold as this is the safest metal to wear orally

9ct Gold Grillz

9ct gold is a popular choice due to being more affordable than the higher carats. It contains the least amount of gold, however despite the lower purity, it makes up for it with durability as it's stronger than the higher carats of gold. This choice will have more of a pale gold look and a beautiful shine.

Pros

- More affordable

- Stronger and more durable than higher carats of gold

- A real nice shine

- Gold is the safest option to wear orally

- If you are buying jewellery as a future investment opting for real gold is the best choice for you

Cons

- Will tarnish over time depending on how you look after your grillz, but can be restored back to new with a clean and a polish

14ct Gold Grillz

14ct gold is a happy medium between 9ct and 14ct. It has a higher gold content and will have a richer colour than 9ct gold but will be slightly more malleable compared to 9ct gold.

Pros

- Rich colour and nice shine

- Will tarnish slower than 9ct gold

- If you are buying jewellery as a future investment opting for real gold is the best choice for you

Cons

- More expensive than 9ct gold

Will still tarnish over time although this will be slower than 9ct gold and can still be restored back to new

- More malleable so you will need to look after them properly to not effect the shape. Placing your grillz back onto the mould will help keep their shape

18ct Gold Grillz

This is the highest purity of gold we use when creating grillz and is usually the preferred choice for those who have a higher budget and want to invest in higher quality jewellery. We do not go any higher than 18ct gold for grillz as they will be too soft for use in the mouth

Pros

- A beautiful rich gold colour and shine

- Will tarnish slower than 9ct and 14ct gold

- Flex on people and tell them it's 18ct!

Cons

- Softer than the lower carats of gold and therefore more malleable - look after them properly so you can enjoy them for years to come.
